Mobile Give

With Mobile Give, donors text your organization’s unique keyword to a designated short code to make a donation ($5 or $10). They receive a text message to reply ‘Yes’ to confirm their donation, which is applied to their next cell phone bill. Mobile Give is a quick and easy way to reach a large new donor base. Organizations must meet the following Mobile Giving Foundation eligibility requirements for Mobile Give: 1) 501(c)(3) non-profit 2) In business for over one year 3) Minimum $500,000 in annual revenue.

How it Works

STEP 1: Donors See or Hear Your Call-to-Action

Create campaign materials to reach potential donors by asking them to text a unique keyword to a specific short code. Communicate through signage, brochures, speeches, social media, TV, radio or however you choose. Everyone in your venue, at your event or on your mailing list becomes a potential donor. Click here for more examples.

STEP 2: Donor Responds to Call to Action

Your donors will compose a brand new text message to the specific short code provided, text in your unique keyword and then hit “Send”.

STEP 3: Donor Confirms Donation

The potential donor will be asked to confirm their donation of either a $5 or $10 amount by replying “Yes”. A “Thank you” message confirming their donation is automatically sent back to their phone. It’s as simple as that.

*Example only. Your cell phone bill will not be charged. Message and Data Rates May Apply. You will not receive further correspondence. To opt-out text STOP to 56512.

STEP 4: Follow-up Request (Optional)

After a successful donation, ask donors to opt-in to receive future text alerts from your organization. You can send event reminders and invitations, last-minute volunteer opportunities, YouTube links, a link to a mobile website, related news items and press, newsletter signup information or even reminders for further text donations. Click here for more information.

STEP 5: Receive Funds Donated

Text donations are applied to the donor’s cell phone bill. Carriers collect the funds once the monthly bill is paid, and sends the donations in full to the Mobile Giving Foundation. The Mobile Giving Foundation will send your organization checks monthly. Give by Cell never comes in contact with the funds your organization has raised. Donors can use their cell phone bill with the charge as the donation receipt for tax purposes.

STEP 6: See Results

You can monitor the success of your campaign on our website, where immediate results are posted. Check the results, learn what is working, and identify your donors by phone number. Of course, our customer service is at your disposal seven days a week.

Getting Started

STEP 1: Give by Cell Application

Complete the Mobile Give Activation Agreement and email or fax back to us to get started.

STEP 2: Mobile Giving Foundation Application

Once you send over the Give by Cell Agreement, you will be contacted by one of our Mobile Giving Experts with how to complete the Mobile Giving Foundation application, and guidance to help make the process as seamless as possible.

Each campaign must adhere to the Mobile Giving Foundation mandatory standards:

  • 501(c)(3) public NPO
  • File an IRS form 990
  • Minimum $500,000 in annual revenue
  • In business for over one year

Fill out the BBB Mobile Giving Foundation application, collect the supplemental documents, and submit both electronic and hard copies to the Mobile Giving Foundation.

STEP 3: Decide on Keyword and Donation Price-point

A keyword is a unique word that you choose to connect the text donations to your organization or cause. This word can be between 3 to 8 characters. Then decide what donation price-point you want your keyword(s) to be – either $5 or $10. Your potential donors will eventually text this keyword to a unique short code that we provide to you to donate.

STEP 4: Carrier Activation

Give by Cell and MGF work together to provision your charitable campaign and keywords so that they will run across all participating Carriers. The carrier activation process takes around a week or two for most carriers, while Verizon typically averages 4-6 weeks for set-up.

STEP 5: Promote

Once all carriers are live you may begin your campaign promotions. This could include such things as flyers, TV, internet, radio or live events. Click here to download 16 Tips for a Successful Mobile Give Campaign.

The American Cancer Society

Featured Products: Mobile Give
Industry: Healthcare & Human Services

Background
As the largest voluntary health organization in the United States, The American Cancer Society has worked relentlessly to raise awareness, provide educational and medical resources, and raise funding to eliminate cancer as a major health problem. Thanks to the Society, nearly 14 million have survived and countless others have avoided cancer. The “Coaches vs. Cancer 2013” program is a nationwide collaboration between the American Cancer Society and the National Association of Basketball Coaches (NABC) that empowers high school and college basketball coaches, their teams, and local communities to make a difference in the fight against cancer.

Opportunity
The “10th Annual Suits and Sneakers Weekend” was held on January 25-27, 2013 and included endorsements from the University of Missouri Tigers’ Frank Haith, Saint Joseph University’s Phil Martelli, Gonzaga University’s Mark Few, Syracuse University’s Jim Boeheim, Stanford University’s Johnny Dawkin, Kentucky University’s John Calipari, and more than 4,000 coaches from around the country. Coaches would show their support by wearing sneakers with their dress suits on game day to raise awareness about the fight against cancer, remind people about ways to reduce their risk of cancer, and fundraising for the cause. Live calls-to-action and pre-recorded PSAs would be aired on screens at the stadium and on television in between games and commercial breaks.

Challenge
The American Cancer Society and “Coaches vs. Cancer 2013” program wanted to utilize the crowd by presenting an easy and simple way to donate as coaches had opportunities to give calls to actions both live and in pre-recorded videos. Maximizing fundraising revenues from the crowd and viewers was very important to organizers. They desired to provide game attendees and television viewers an additional easy giving option.

Solution
To increase overall donation amounts, The American Cancer Society utilized Give by Cell’s Mobile Give platform to allow attendees and viewers to donate $5 by texting COACH to 20222*, in which donations were charged directly to the donors’ cell phone bill. Also, every time fans text from January 21 through April 9, they would be entered in for a chance to win exclusive basketball merchandise, VIP courtside packages, one-on-one coach experiences, and more.

Result
The “Suits and Sneakers Weekend” launch of their campaign raised nearly $2,000 in text message donations from over 400 unique supporters in two days. American Cancer Society and Coaches vs. Cancer created PSAs that broadcasted their keyword along with print campaigns and live calls-to-action during time-outs from participating coaches to advertise the keyword and motivate donations.

*A one-time donation of $5.00 will be added to your mobile phone bill or deducted from your prepaid balance. Donor must be age 18+ and all donations must be authorized by the account holder (e.g. parents). By texting YES, the user agrees to the terms and conditions. All charges are billed by and payable to your mobile service provider. Service is available on most carriers. Donations are collected for the benefit of the “American Cancer Society” by the Mobile Giving Foundation and subject to the terms found at www.hmgf.org/t. Message & Data Rates May Apply. You can unsubscribe at any time by texting STOP to shortcode 20222; text HELP to 20222 for help.

Hearts United for Animals

Featured Products: Mobile Give
Industry: Animal Related; Rescue Shelter; Charitable Organization

Background
Hearts United for Animals is a national no-kill shelter, sanctuary and animal welfare organization dedicated to the relief of suffering located in Auburn, Nebraska. They welcome animals that are lost, afraid, hungry or ill and provide comfort, a warm soft bed, good food, medical care and love. With a staff of 25 caregivers and about 50 regular volunteers, HUA cares for more than 300 dogs and a smaller number of cats. Hearts United for Animals operates a variety of programs with a proven track record of success.

Opportunity
On a Wednesday morning just after midnight, HUA received a call from an emergency animal hospital in the Omaha area. A 12-week old puppy, later named Gibson, had arrived with pneumonia and the owners did not wish to pay for treatment. The staff of the animal hospital asked the owners to release Gibson into their care, where he immediately began to receive treatment. HUA knew Gibson’s veterinary bills would reach nearly $2,000, but they also understood it was the only way to save his life.

Challenge
The organization has a large online community of supporters that heavily interact with their Twitter and Facebook posts. They wanted to utilize their supporters and provide an easy way for them to contribute to Gibson’s care, or any emergency situation involving one of their animals, without filling out long credit card forms.

Solution
To quickly capture donations for Gibson’s recovery, the organization used their already established Mobile Give platform from Give by Cell. They asked their supporters via posts on Facebook and Twitter to donate $10 by texting GIFT to 20222*, in which donations would be charged directly to the donors’ cell phone bill.

Result
Within 24 hours of posting the message on their social media networks, the organization received 172 unique text messages and $1,430 in donations through Mobile Give. There was an outcry of support from their community as people shared their post on Facebook, retweeted their tweet on Twitter, and helped spread the word about Gibson’s situation and need for care.

Gibson is now on the road to a full recovery and has been adopted by a family. Hearts United continues to use mobile giving and has raised tens of thousands of dollars!
